Entrance to the St. John Cemetery, undated photo. The St. John Cemetery was opened as a Roman Catholic burial ground in 1879, when Middle Village was very much a rural part of Long Island. Today, it is one of nine Catholic cemeteries in the New York metropolitan area, and the final resting place of prominent New Yorkers including John Gotti, Mario Cuomo, Geraldine Ferraro, and Robert Mapplethorpe.

79-55 Metropolitan Avenue
Newtown - Columbia Park Hotel - Middle Village Columbia Park Hotel - Peter Becker's Columbia Park Hotel at the NW corner of Metropolitan Ave. and 80th St. (Formerly Dry Harbor Road), viewed from the south side of Metropolitan Ave. The Cosius Family acquired the lots on the NW corner of this intersection and built a saloon and dance hall on the site which became known as Columbia Park, they operated the facility until about 1890. It became a hotel when the Raines Law went it effect. In May, 1900 Peter Becker became the proprietor. \[Copy of print stamped "Historical Survey of Long Island - Collection of Vincent F. Seyfried."]
St. John's Hotel
Newtown - St. John's Hotel - Middle Village St. John's Hotel - Anton Braun's St. Johns Hotel, SW corner Metropolitan Ave. and Dry Harbor Rd. (now 80th St.). This view is looking west along Metropolitan Ave. In the 1870s and possibly earlier the Hirsch Family operated a general store and saloon here. In October 1885 Peter Hirsch put up a new hotel building on the site with a saloon on the ground floor. By 1890 Anton Braun was the proprietor and he called his establishment the St. John's Hotel, named for the cemetery nearby. It was acquired by Bermel & Co. Monument Works in 1923, and it was torn down. To left of the Hotel is McCloskey's Florist Shop.
65-89 Fitchett Street
Newtown - William Kinsey House - Rego Park William Kinsey House - House with outbuildings on the north side of White Pot Road (Fleet St., now 66th Ave.) a little east of Fitchett St. The house was grey and the adjacent barn was red. Note: outhouse and doghouse to the rear.
66-11 Woodhaven Boulevard
Newtown - Woodhaven Boulevard - Rego Park Woodhaven Boulevard - looking south along Woodhaven Blvd. (formerly Trotting Course Lane) from a point near the old White Pot Road (later Fleet St., now 66th Ave.) St. John's Cemetery is on the right (west side). Schwomp owned both houses on the left in 1896, their sites are now under the road bed of the widened Woodhaven Boulevard, and the nearest house would have been in front of 66-11 Woodhaven Blvd.
85-29 66th Avenue
Newtown - Baum House - Rego Park Baum House - Yellow house with white trim, on the north side of White Pot Road (now 66th Ave.), about 200 Feet east of Trotting Course Lane (Now Woodhaven Blvd.). The house was still standing in 1959 as 85-29 66th Ave., and had been re-shingled, but has since been torn down. George Baum (of the Ridgewood farming family) owned it in 1891 and 1896. 65-55 Woodhaven Boulevard
Newtown - Lieppe Houses - Rego Park Lieppe Houses - View looking east showing two Lieppe Houses (he built them) on east side of Woodhaven Blvd. (formerly Trotting Course Lane), about midway between Juniper Swamp Rd. (Furmanville Ave.) and White Pot Rd. (66th Ave.). Today these would be in the road bed of the widened Woodhaven Blvd. near 65th Drive. At right center is a fence at the old boundary of St. Johns cemetery approximately on the line of 65th Drive on right in the distance are the Schwomp Houses.
Woodhaven Boulevard and 66th Avenue
Newtown - Woodhaven Boulevard - Rego Park Woodhaven Boulevard - View north along old Woodhaven Ave. (formerly Trotting Course Lane, and now Woodhaven Blvd.) at White Pot Rd. (later Fleet St., now 66th Ave.). At far left are the Lieppe Houses. The NE corner has the foundations of the White Pot School (P.S. 69) which burned down, the school site was donated by Jacobus Springsteen in 1739, and the burned building was the 4th or 5th school structure on the site. This site is now in the roadbed of the widened Woodhaven Blvd.
80th Street and Juniper Valley Road
Newtown - Dry Harbor Road - Middle Village Dry Harbor Road - Looking north along 80th St. (Dry Harbor Road) from New Juniper Valley Road. The land and building sites to the right or east of the road are now within the expanded St. Johns Cemetery. Rieger owned the small house on the right near Furmanville Ave. The Old Methodist Episcopal Cemetery was on the left side of the road opposite and a little north of Rieger's house.
