Newtown - St. John's Hotel - Middle Village

St. John's Hotel - Anton Braun's St. Johns Hotel, SW corner Metropolitan Ave. and Dry Harbor Rd. (now 80th St.). This view is looking west along Metropolitan Ave. In the 1870s and possibly earlier the Hirsch Family operated a general store and saloon here. In October 1885 Peter Hirsch put up a new hotel building on the site with a saloon on the ground floor. By 1890 Anton Braun was the proprietor and he called his establishment the St. John's Hotel, named for the cemetery nearby. It was acquired by Bermel & Co. Monument Works in 1923, and it was torn down. To left of the Hotel is McCloskey's Florist Shop.
