Entrance to the St. John Cemetery, undated photo.
The St. John Cemetery was opened as a Roman Catholic burial ground in 1879, when Middle Village was very much a rural part of Long Island. Today, it is one of nine Catholic cemeteries in the New York metropolitan area, and the final resting place of prominent New Yorkers including John Gotti, Mario Cuomo, Geraldine Ferraro, and Robert Mapplethorpe.
