Story

In 1835, artist and entrepreneur Jared Bell pioneered the large-format poster, which was rich with vivid colors to advertise a circus. By 1918, bold imagery and slogans calling attention to food, medicines, and entertainment filled New York's already saturated visual field.

Chalmers Knitting Mill was founded in Amsterdam, New York (on the Mohawk River, northwest of Schenectady) in 1901. They used a revolutionary knitting process to manufacture long underwear (which was a ubiquitous article of clothing for men at the time). The patented process was called 'Porosknit,' and it left small holes in material allowing a person’s skin to breathe (union suits up to that point were usually hot and uncomfortable). They later further transformed the underwear market in the 1910s by dividing the union suit into two pieces — top and bottom. (oh happy day!) The underwear company had an uneven financial history but tended to do well during war years as they manufactured goods for the military. 1917 must have been a flush year as they were able to afford a fancy electric sign in the prime location of Times Square!

Story

Originally known as Long Acre (also Longacre) Square after London’s carriage district, Times Square served as the early site for William H. Vanderbilt’s American Horse Exchange. In the late 1880s, Long Acre Square consisted of a large open space surrounded by drab apartments.

Seventh Avenue at the north west corner of 47th Street, ca. 1915. This is a quintessential Times Square photograph from the early 20th century. Originally Long Acre Square, the center of the city's horse carriage industry in the late 19th century, the area would have its name changed in 1904. Times Square was christened that after the New York Times newspaper constructed their headquarters on 42nd Street. In the next two decades, the introduction of the subway and the construction of hotels and theatres prompted a massive boom of the area into a busy cultural center. The billboards depicted here advertise nearby attractions including the Shubert and Winter Garden Theatres, as well as take advantage of the well traveled intersection to advertise products such as beer and automobiles.
