Seventh Avenue at the north west corner of 47th Street, ca. 1915.
This is a quintessential Times Square photograph from the early 20th century. Originally Long Acre Square, the center of the city's horse carriage industry in the late 19th century, the area would have its name changed in 1904. Times Square was christened that after the New York Times newspaper constructed their headquarters on 42nd Street. In the next two decades, the introduction of the subway and the construction of hotels and theatres prompted a massive boom of the area into a busy cultural center. The billboards depicted here advertise nearby attractions including the Shubert and Winter Garden Theatres, as well as take advantage of the well traveled intersection to advertise products such as beer and automobiles.
