The photographer is viewing northeastward across the Empire State Building site, from a point to the west of the Avenue on W. 33rd Street. Occupyin2 the 34th-35th Street frontage is B. Altman's department store. Across the roof of same appears the upper portion of the Combustion Engineering Building on Madison Avenue. In the loft
background is the Lincoln Building.

Another view of the same intersection, taken at an earlier date. The farther building is the B. Altman & Co. department store; the buildings in the foreground are at he southeast corner of the intersectfon. This view is notable for the distinctness of the ornamentation around the Altmen building. The columns are in the Ionic order of classical Greek architecture.
