Eastern Hotel In 1790, Captain John Cole purchased this property and demolished a two-story warehouse on the site to build the Eagle Hotel, which opened in 1822. It was renamed the Eastern Hotel in the late 1850s in honor of the S.S. Great Eastern, the largest ship ever built at the time. The hotel was demolished sometime after 1963.

State Street and Whitehall Street Numbers 1 and 2 State Street were purchased by flour merchant John B. Coles sometime before 1800, and 3 State Street was purchased by the Overing family in 1795. The corner building at 1 State Street was home to American engineer and inventor Robert Fulton and later housed the Seaman's Church Institute from 1902-1913. The buildings were sold in 1913 and demolished in 1914.
