"West 230th Street, adjoining the N. W. corner of Broadway, showing the Macomb Mansion. In 1693 the house was known as "the public house at the north end of the bridge", and in 1776 as Cox's Tavern. Alexander Macomb bought the house in 1779. In the foreground is Spuyten Duyvil Creek. Also shown (right) is the elevated structure of the I.R.T. Van Cortlandt Park subway line, on Broadway." The Macomb Mansion was a sprawling house that included a section originally built in 1693. A residence, a watering hole, and once witness to nearby Revolutionary War action, the structure survived into the 20th century. When the nearby elevated trains of the I.R.T were constructed in 1907 the right of way very nearly touched the home. The house was demolished in 1919.

This photo is just north of 231st Street, where a station on the IRT Broadway-Seventh Avenue Line would be completed the next year. In 1907, the segment of Broadway had not yet been paved, though streetcar tracks of the C-line from Van Cortlandt Park to West Farms Square are visible. The horse-drawn carriage at left bears an advertisement for the Mount Hope Market.

Organized as a the Protestant Episcopal society in 1855, the first church building belonging to the The Church of the Mediator was a wood-frame structure consecrated in 1864. The current building was designed in the neo-Gothic style by Henry Vaughan, who designed the original portion of the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C. The church photographed here was consecrated in 1927. The church is also the guardian of the Corlear Sycamore, a massive tree on Corlear Avenue just south of West 231st Street that is considered the "oldest living thing in Kingsbridge."

Kingsbridge Branch, data unknown. Designed by McKim, Mead & White and completed in 1905, the small neo-Federal Kingsbridge Branch was one of the smallest Carnegie's constructed in the city. It is only 3,700 square feet. The building, which it set far back from the sidewalk, is surrounded by a generous lawn. The library was decommissioned in 1958 when a new larger branch was built on West 231st Street. Today the structure functions as a pre-school.

Despite the massive changes that the Bronx has seen since the mid 20th century, this view remains remarkably similar. The main structures seen here— the one-story peaked roof structure with the sign, the taller three-story building behind it, and the wood-frame home in the distance at left— all remain standing.
