Kingsbridge Ave., at the S.W. corner of West 231st Street, showing the Church of the Mediator, October, 1927.
Organized as a the Protestant Episcopal society in 1855, the first church building belonging to the The Church of the Mediator was a wood-frame structure consecrated in 1864. The current building was designed in the neo-Gothic style by Henry Vaughan, who designed the original portion of the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C. The church photographed here was consecrated in 1927.
The church is also the guardian of the Corlear Sycamore, a massive tree on Corlear Avenue just south of West 231st Street that is considered the "oldest living thing in Kingsbridge."
