Watson Mansion, 1911. Described in the New York Times article that told of its sale, the Watson Mansion was described as "a rambling stone structure of English architecture with wide portico and gabled roof." The home was called Willmount (many of the Bronx "country" homes were named) by its builder, William Watson. A wealthy merchant in mid 19th century New York, the man himself died in 1877 and his wife resided in the grand home until her death in 1894. In 1909 the estate, which amounted to 1200 city lots with a frontage of 3000 feet on the Bronx River, was sold. The land was quickly subdivided and sold off for development.

Starlight Amusement Park ca. 1940 The first amusement park in the Bronx, Starlight Park opened as Exposition Park in 1918 as part of a trade exposition intended to curry foreign investment after World War I. Following the Exposition's end in 1918, it became Starlight Park. Its main attraction was a gigantic, naturalistic swimming pool, as well as assorted rides and games. Later on it, a stadium known as the Coliseum was built and was home to the New York Giants for the better part of a decade. However, by 1940, the park was closed and systematically demolished.

Bronx: Starlight Park. Active Atheism These huge caricatures of the Church & Czarisa, made by New York Communists, are like those constantly used in Russian anti-religious Propaganda. These grotesque figures may have meant a great deal to real grown- up red at a meeting in Starlight Park, the Bronx, in New York City, March 16th, 1930, but they were just amusing toys to the youngsters gathered about them. The figure at left represents the Church - (Rasputin, the Black Monk) and at right is Imperialism in figure of Nicholas - Czar of all the Russians. NEG # 3207
