Watson Mansion, 1911.
Described in the New York Times article that told of its sale, the Watson Mansion was described as "a rambling stone structure of English architecture with wide portico and gabled roof." The home was called Willmount (many of the Bronx "country" homes were named) by its builder, William Watson. A wealthy merchant in mid 19th century New York, the man himself died in 1877 and his wife resided in the grand home until her death in 1894. In 1909 the estate, which amounted to 1200 city lots with a frontage of 3000 feet on the Bronx River, was sold. The land was quickly subdivided and sold off for development.
