Maple Grove Cemetery Administration Building
Post
Entrance to Maple Grove Cemetery, April 23, 1936. At the far right of this photograph, the Victorian Administration Building of Maple Grove Cemetery can be seen, with its tall peaked tower. Designed by James Ware and completed in 1880, the structure welcomed visitors entering at the Lefferts Boulevard and Kew Gardens Road entrance. All administrative functions of the cemetery were into this building by the mid 20th century. Those same functions were moved out of the building in 2009 when the new Center Building was completed. Today it remains well-kept, but empty. The house seen at left is no longer standing.

Survey photo of the intersection of Queens Boulevard, Union Turnpike, and Kew Gardens Road, viewed from the latter; October 16, 1930. This photo was taken in preparation for the construction of the IND Queens Boulevard line subway. Before a final route was approved, an alternate proposal would have seen the four-track tunnel take the more southerly fork at this intersection, and follow Kew Gardens Road (in the foreground) to Hillside Avenue. Today, this intersection is a true crossroads of Central Queens. Beneath the street level intersection is another crossing created through massive 1930s project: the Interboro (Jackie Robinson) Parkway, which opened to traffic in July, 1935.

Walter C. Mordecai residence, ca. 1915. Kew Gardens in one of the planned communities of Queens. In the late 19th century the area included Maple Grove Cemetery and the railroad station that served mourners with minimal population. In the first decade of the 20th century, a new community was planned, lots were laid out and developed and infrastructure and municipal services installed. It was to this new garden community of largely neo-Tudor style homes that Walter C. Mordecai moved into in 1912. Purchasing the large and well appointed corner home (once No. 123 Quentin Road) for his new bride, the couple resided here until 1933. Re-numbered along with huge portions of Queens in the 1920s, the address is now 119-04 80th Road. Since the 1960s the house has been home to at least two dentists.

Entrance to the Kew Gardens Indoor Golf Course, at the east corner of Queens Boulevard and 78th Avenue; October 10, 1930. This Queens Boulevard oddity opened to the public in September, 1929, as the Fox Kew Gardens Theatre (even though it sat squarely on the Forest Hills Side of Union Turnpike). Unfortunately, the 1,287-seat theatre's run was to be short lived: the rapid residential development of Queens was disrupted by the crash of 1929, and the Kew Gardens Theatre shuttered in December of the same year. Undeterred, Fox turned to a new kind of recreation to draw patrons: miniature golf. The defunct theatre was retrofitted and reopened in August, 1930, as the Kew Gardens Indoor Golf Course — billed here as "America's Finest." A full rounds of 18 holes cost 50 cents. Miniature golf proved a difficult a sell in tight economic times, and the course was closed again. The building was demolished in the 1950s, after about two decades of vacancy.
