DeKalb Branch, Brooklyn Public Library
Post
DeKalb Branch, August 18, 1930. The DeKalb Library was constructed on a plot that has previously been occupied by an 1854-built Italianate villa. The DeKalb Library was one of the original Brooklyn libraries, pre-dating this structure. The new library building, created as part of the Carnegie grant, was completed in 1905 and designed by William B. Tubby. The library was located in a prime spot, near to numerous streetcar routes and only a block away from the busy commercial strip along Broadway. The building was designated an individual landmark in 2004.

992 Greene Avenue, 1941. The photographers notes on this photo say that it is "showing one of the few remaining old homes in this neighborhood." Despite the 70 years that have passed, this home still remains today and is in seemly terrific shape.

"Public School No. 129, this being the Gates Avenue side of the building, 1931." Opened in 1902, and likely designed by C.B.J Snyder, P.S. 129 originally had seats for 1600 students. The school remained open until the 1970s and has been replaced with another school building of a considerably more modern style now numbered P.S. 308.

Patchen Avenue, at the southeast corner of Greene Avenue, showing a synagogue, 1941. This building, noted as a synagogue in the photographer's notes, remains standing today but is no longer in use due to a fire that broke out in 2016. The Rabbi, Baruch Yehudah, hopes to rebuild the house of worship, which he says has been on this corner since the 1700s and a synagogue since the 1860s. The original synagogue was named B’nai Jacob Joseph and housed an Ashkenazi orthodox community. Up until 2016 (and since 1967) the building housed B’nai Adath Kol Beth Yisrael, an Israelite community of African-American Jews.
