1941
Patchen Avenue, at the southeast corner of Greene Avenue, showing a synagogue, 1941.
This building, noted as a synagogue in the photographer's notes, remains standing today but is no longer in use due to a fire that broke out in 2016. The Rabbi, Baruch Yehudah, hopes to rebuild the house of worship, which he says has been on this corner since the 1700s and a synagogue since the 1860s. The original synagogue was named B’nai Jacob Joseph and housed an Ashkenazi orthodox community. Up until 2016 (and since 1967) the building housed B’nai Adath Kol Beth Yisrael, an Israelite community of African-American Jews.
