Collapsed section of the West Side Elevated Highway, just north of 525 West Street, ca. 1975.

On December 15, 1973 a section of the West Side Elevated Highway collapsed. 80 feet of the roadway fell to the street level below, along with a sedan and a dump truck. It is believed that the weight of the dump truck (more than 30 tons), which was carrying asphalt for highway roadwork, caused the collapse. (The truck was severely overloaded, with nearly 10 more tons than it should have been carrying.) Neither driver was seriously injured. This incident led to an investigation of the soundness of the elevated roadway. It was found to be serious defective and the road south of 46th Street was closed permanently.
