“A new warehouse is being built over and including the elevated roadbed in the block from Horatio to Gansevoort Streets. April 9, 1934.”
The nine-story brick and limestone warehouse was designed by architects John B. Snook Sons for the New York State Realty & Terminal Company (owners of the elevated railroad right of way), built between 1931-35 and leased to the Manhattan Refrigerating Company, who bought the building outright in 1941.
Construction on lower segment West Side Line elevated tracks was completed in 1934, eliminating all grade crossings of the former freight line along West Street and “Death Avenue,” as Tenth Avenue was nicknamed.
