Fresh, Salt Smoked Fish sign, 146 Beekman Street between South and Front Streets (sign & building still extant)
146 Beekman Street, date unknown.
Constructed in 1885 as a smokehouse, the building at 146 Beekman has been tied to the NYC fishing industry, centered in this neighborhood, since its construction. By 1904, the building was also the headquarters of the New York Wholesale Fish Dealers Association. The painted signs on the facade that read "Fresh, Salt Smoked Fish" were in place by the 1930s, though likely were painted earlier. From 1914 to 1997 the building was home to the The Meyer and Thompson Smoked Fish Company. In 2004 a bar and cafe called Fresh Salt opened in the ground floor space and, despite damage endured during Hurricane Sandy in 2012, remains open, serving the neighborhood under its historic sign.
