This view is looking south on West Broadway, from near Washington Square Park. The photo was likely taken shortly before Sixth Avenue El service was discontinued in December, 1938.

Few elements of this street scene remain: The elevated tracks were dismantled shortly thereafter; the Open Door (left) at No. 567 West Broadway has been replaced by the Elmer Holmes Bobst Library; No. 562 (upper right) has been replaced by new, low-rise construction. Even the street names have changed: West Broadway is now LaGuardia Place, above Houston Street.
