The photo was likely taken shortly before Sixth Avenue El service was discontinued in December, 1938. Few elements of this street scene remain: The elevated tracks were dismantled shortly thereafter; the Open Door (left) at No. 567 West Broadway has been replaced by the Elmer Holmes Bobst Library; No. 562 (upper right) has been replaced by new, low-rise construction. Even the street names have changed: West Broadway is now LaGuardia Place, above Houston Street.
