Elevated service on the Fifth Avenue line was discontinued in June 1940, but the remaining tracks weren’t demolished until September 1941. In the background is the Williamsburgh Savings Bank Tower at 1 Hanson Place, completed in 1929, and until 2010 the tallest building in Brooklyn. At left is the Corn Exchange Bank Trust Co. at 19 Flatbush Avenue.
