At the turn of the 20th century, Downtown Brooklyn had a theater district to rival Manhattan’s. In the space of a few blocks near the Flatbush Avenue Extension, a collection of grand multi-use ballrooms and smaller vaudeville stages proliferated. Just a few decades later, most had fallen into disuse and disrepair, but in many cases, the buildings themselves survive. Here’s a look at a thriving entertainment district of days gone by — and the contemporary adaptive reuse projects reinvigorating its legacy.

Underneath the tracks of the Fifth Avenue El, over Flatbush Avenue, south of Fulton Street, August 1941. Elevated service on the Fifth Avenue line was discontinued in June 1940, but the remaining tracks weren’t demolished until September 1941. In the background is the Williamsburgh Savings Bank Tower at 1 Hanson Place, completed in 1929, and until 2010 the tallest building in Brooklyn. At left is the Corn Exchange Bank Trust Co. at 19 Flatbush Avenue.

In the opening decades of the 20th Century, the proliferation of new subway lines in Brooklyn changed the shape of Brooklyn's busiest intersections; new routes were excavated and transit hubs born, replacing the streetcars and elevated railways of years past. This collection includes a selection of photographs documenting subway construction in and around Times Plaza, Flatbush Avenue, and Ashland Place.
