53 Gansevoort Street, 1936.

This triangular building (seen at its most narrow near Ninth Avenue) was constructed in 1887 for Robert and Ogden Goelet. Designed by Joseph M. Dunn, the five-story, store and loft building, housed dozens of food and meat manufacturers and purveyors through the 19th and 20th century. The Goelet family (whose ownership of the property began prior to this building in 1847) held onto the building until 1942. Today the food history of building remains seen in the faded painted logos of its facade which note "BURNHAM'S CLAM CHOWDER" and "NEW ENGLAND BISCUIT WORK."
