West 13th Street looking west to Pier 54, Master Purveyor, and the High Line, ca. 1990. For 44 years Master Purveyors was on 13th Street near Washington Street. The company relocated to Hunts Point Terminal Market, a 60-acre site in the Bronx, in spring 2001 when the landlord refused to renew the lease. Sam Solasz, the owner, describes his customer base as ''the finest hotels and restaurants in New York.'' Along with his two sons with whom he co-owns the business, Sam Solasz sells cuts to top-chop houses in the city like Peter Luger Steak House, Wolfgang's Steakhouse, '21' Club and the Hilton Hotel chain. Before starting Master Purveyors, Sam worked for Hygrade Food Corporation. It was the third largest meat business in the U.S. at the time, selling frankfurters to Nathan’s Famous Hot Dogs. Sam came up with the original blend of Nathan's while at Hygrade. "They loved it," he said. One week after his first blend, Nathan's started buying 2,000–3,000lbs of Sam's frankfurters weekly!
Community Takes Back Public Space
Story
Public art represents and is represented with many different forms and ideas, its creation, concept and location all come into play when looking at a piece's place in an urban landscape such as New York City. Public art takes up a space, one that is always shared with a community, part of this story would like to address how the two intersect. In some cases a piece can even breed its own community, in the case of 5 Pointz, which in itself was its own piece of public art but also a space that created a community of artists. The Graffiti Mecca can also lead us to ask the question, “What is considered public art and where is the line drawn?” This question will be explored as well as looking to an ideal future for a city where art is put at a higher priority. Where graffiti artists aren’t criminalized for their work or used for profit. Looking at spaces and experiences where a community can be represented and enhanced by public art with ways of giving back and giving all people ways of expressing themselves.
