Central Substation, IND Subway
Post

Central Substation, IND Subway, entrance detail, ca. 1994. Much of the infrastructure for the IND subway lines are designed in an Art Deco syle owing to their construction in the late 1920s and 1930s. This Central Substation was the largest of the IND powerhouses. The building is four-stories and constructed of a tan brick. Completed in 1932, the Art Deco lettering and ornamentation above the doors and at the roofline still remains.

Manhattan: 6th Avenue - 53nd Street (West) Sixth Avenue, west side, at W. 53rd Street as viewed northwestward from 52nd Street. Formerly this corner was darkened by the old 6th Avenue "El" which made a 90-degree bend to run west on 53rd Street. The vacant lot at the left has recently been cleared by the demolition of a 4-story frame building with a brick front. The adjoining 5-story tenement is being removed in Views 2 and 3. This bears No. 1309 (old No. 927) Sixth Avenue. At the left margin, in the later view, is the 6-story dwelling that is to be razed and its site improved by a modern apartment structure. This is to be the first major development on the avenue.
