Board of Water Supply. City Water Tunnel No. 1. After a dynamite blast, sandhogs removed rubble with the help of a Myers-Whaley mucking machine. The machine picked up the muck and sent it on a conveyor belt to locomotive cars that then transported it through the tunnel and 700 feet up a shaft to the surface. From there, muck was hauled by horse-drawn carriages to scows in the East River and probably dropped into the ocean. Muckers were paid $2 per 8-hour shift. April 4, 1913.
