The Story of Temple Emanu-El
Story

Temple Emanu-El was established in 1845 as New York City’s first Reform congregation. 33 members met in a loft at the intersection of Clinton and Grand Streets on Manhattan’s Lower East Side. As the congregation grew, Emanu-El moved further and further uptown. In 1854, it moved to its third location at 110 East 12th Street, which later housed St. Ann’s Roman Catholic Church

Manhattan: 5th Avenue - 42nd Street Fifth Avenue, north from 42nd Street, showing traffic conditions on this main arterial thoroughfare at an early date. In the foreground, at the N.E. corner of the Avenue and East 43rd Street, is the original Temple Beth-El which subsequent1y moved uptown. Outlined in the distance are the spires of St. Patricks Cathedral opposite that atop the Collegiate Church of St. Nicholas. On the left is the old Bennett Bldg. which stood for years at the N.W. corner of Fifth Avenue and W. 42nd Street. The row of 5-story brownstones bearing advertising material will provide a site for the subsequent Postal Life Insurance Co. Bldg. The interesting point in reference to this is that the corner building was the home of "Boss" Tweed. This photostat is one of a set depicting traffic conditions and filed under Police Activities and various Fifth Avenue locations and are evidently part of a group published in the March 11, 1909 issue - page 229.
