Board of Water Supply. City Water Tunnel No. 1. Drilling bench underneath Manhattan. The tripod drill pictured in the foreground was used to drill holes in the bench, or floor, of the tunnel for explosives to be inserted. Four or five holes in a row were drilled and shot in 6 foot advances. Excavation was an around-the-clock operation performed in eight-hour shifts. June 11, 1913.
