Board of Water Supply. City Water Tunnel No. 1. Camera at west side of Allen Street, between Grand and Broome Streets, looking east. Drill machine rigged to take geological core samples, or test borings, on a proposed line for the tunnel on Allen Street, in Manhattan's Lower East Side. City Water Tunnel No. 1 began at the Hill View Reservoir in Yonkers and travelled south through the Bronx, Manhattan and Brooklyn where it connected to Staten Island via the Narrows Siphon and continued to the Silver Lake Reservoir. July 25, 1911.
