[Lexington Avenue between 94th and 95th Streets: IRT East Side Line]

Subway construction taking place at Lexington Avenue between 94th and 95th Streets, Manhattan on the IRT East Side Line. The shovel on the right is depositing spoils into the "Battleship" on the left. Battleships were buckets placed on small cars with cradles shaped to fit them. The cars were then rolled down narrow-gauge track to a point where they could be hauled upgrade by small stationary hoisting machines. The buckets could then be hoisted to the surface by derricks.
