Hamilton Grange
Alexander Hamilton’s country house, designed in the Federal style, once stood on a 35-acre tract. In 1889, when development threatened its survival, it was given to Saint Luke’s Church and moved from Convent Avenue and West 143rd Street to its present site and altered. The house was briefly used as a church and later as a rectory. It was purchased by a preservation organization in 1924, opened to the public nine years later, and donated to the U.S. Department of the Interior in 1962.From the "Guide to New York City Landmarks", courtesy of the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission.
