Jans Martense Schenck House

Built by Jans Martense Schenck around 1675, this simple two-room Dutch colonial house has a central chimney and a high-pitched roof. Originally, the roof was shingled and the facade clad with horizontal wood clapboard siding. Between the late 18th- and early 20th-centuries, changes were made to the house including the addition of a kitchen, a porch with four columns, and dormer windows. In 1952, the Brooklyn Museum acquired the house and in 1964 re-assembled the original structure inside the museum, where it is still on display.
