5820 Broadway, circa 1915. Just after the turn of the 20th century, a German beer hall opened at the corner of West 238th Street and Broadway. Originally called Buckeye's it was the epitome of a classy watering hole, complete with swinging saloon doors and stained glass windows (visible in this photograph). The brew served at that time was likely the product of a single local brewery. During Prohibition, an ice cream parlor was the front for the still functioning bar. After the war, the business opened as an Irish pub and by 1960 was called The Punch Bowl, its current name. Though both the interior and exterior have changed over the last 115 years, the original stained glass now hangs over the bar, the elevated train continues to rubble by just above the entrance, and the patrons are still a local working-class population.
