Macomb Mansion
Post
"West 230th Street, adjoining the N. W. corner of Broadway, showing the Macomb Mansion. In 1693 the house was known as "the public house at the north end of the bridge", and in 1776 as Cox's Tavern. Alexander Macomb bought the house in 1779. In the foreground is Spuyten Duyvil Creek. Also shown (right) is the elevated structure of the I.R.T. Van Cortlandt Park subway line, on Broadway." The Macomb Mansion was a sprawling house that included a section originally built in 1693. A residence, a watering hole, and once witness to nearby Revolutionary War action, the structure survived into the 20th century. When the nearby elevated trains of the I.R.T were constructed in 1907 the right of way very nearly touched the home. The house was demolished in 1919.

Crew surveying Broadway ahead of the construction of elevated tracks, April 5, 1907. The M. Hummel Grocery is located at 5614 Broadway, in the Kingsbridge Section of the Bronx. This photo is just north of 231st Street, where a station on the IRT Broadway-Seventh Avenue Line would be completed the next year. In 1907, the segment of Broadway had not yet been paved, though streetcar tracks of the C-line from Van Cortlandt Park to West Farms Square are visible. The horse-drawn carriage at left bears an advertisement for the Mount Hope Market.

Despite the massive changes that the Bronx has seen since the mid 20th century, this view remains remarkably similar. The main structures seen here— the one-story peaked roof structure with the sign, the taller three-story building behind it, and the wood-frame home in the distance at left— all remain standing.

Elevated trestle construction for the IRT Broadway—Seventh Avenue Line, at West 230th Street and Broadway, May 28, 1907. The near end of the elevated structure bears an advertisement for Terry & Tench Co., Steel Contractors; the Manhattan-based firm provided steel for a number of major infrastructure projects, including the IRT line and the Manhattan Bridge. The southward view includes the massive brick structure of the Third Avenue Railway Company's Kingsbridge Power House, located off of Ninth Avenue in Inwood.
