Lithuania Square
Post
Lithuanian restaurant at Union Avenue and Stagg Street. September 24, 1941. In the early 20th century, Eastern European immigrants began to settle in Williamsburg, including a significant Lithuanian community (today, the Church of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary continues to provide services in Lithuanian). Across Union Avenue from the restaurant is Lithuanian Square (then Lituanica Square), a small gore park with a monument to two Lithuanian aviators who perished in a 1933 attempt to complete a transatlantic flight from Brooklyn to Kaunas, Lithuania.
Eastern District Brooklyn High School
Post
Eastern District Brooklyn High School, 1907 This high school was proposed in 1894 as a facility for the Eastern District (Williamsburg and Bushwick) of the city of Brooklyn. It welcomed its first students in 1900, two years after Brooklyn became a borough of the Greater New York City. Originally housed in the former Eastern District Library and two annex spaces, the new Eastern District High School was completed in 1907. Designed by the BOE Superintendent of Buildings, C.B.J. Snyder, the Gothic style, H-shaped building is clad in gray brick, limestone, and terracotta. The school suffered in the 1960s and 1970s from overcrowding, student unrest, and violence. Eastern District moved into a new building on Grand Street in 1981. (The school in its new location would eventually close after the 1995/1996 school year, reopening later in 1996 as the Grand Street Campus, housing several small high schools under one roof.) Today the 1907 building on Keap Street and Marcy Avenue serves as a girl's yeshiva called Bais Ruchel d'Satmar.

Containing an armory, club rooms, and later a drill hall, the armory was one of the few funded by the state and not Kings County. While the 47th Regiment left the armory in the 1800s, various Army occupants and the National Guard utilized the space until 2011.

(Former) Colored School No. 3, later Public School 69 ARCHITECT: Samuel B. Leonard DATE: 1879-81 STYLE: Romanesque Revival Built in 1879-81, the former Colored School No. 3 schoolhouse was designed by architect Samuel B. Leonard, the Superintendent of Buildings and Repairs for the Brooklyn Board of Education. The only known “colored” school building remaining in Brooklyn, Colored School No. 3 as an institution evolved from the town of Williamsburgh’s original African Free School, which had been founded prior to 1841. The school was taken over by the Board of Education of the City of Brooklyn in 1855, when it was given the name “Colored School No. 3.” It was renamed P.S. 69 in 1887, and was later absorbed by the school system of the City of New York after the consolidation of 1898. Romanesque Revival in style, the school building has arched window openings and a prominent entrance with large keystones, a raised central section with a gable and blind arcade, corbelled brickwork, and dentil courses.
Williamsburg Branch, Brooklyn Public Library
Post
Williamsburg Branch, ca. 1905. The Williamsburg Library, completed between 1903 and 1905, was the first Carnegie Library begun in Brooklyn. The cornerstone was laid in November of 1903, at a well-attended event. A time capsule of documents including a copy of the Carnegie contract was laid in the cornerstone. The large Y-shaped building sits on a raised, grassy triangular plot. Its floorplan meant to evoke an open book, with two wings radiating from a center bay. The building, designed by Richard A. Walker, was designated an individual landmark in 2006 and still functions as branch of the Brooklyn Public Library.
