This house (once belonging to the local Snedeker and Vanderveer families) sat on the south side of Jamaica Avenue between 77th and 78th Streets. According to the photograph's metadata, the home was razed in 1924. In 1933, Fred Trump (father to Donald) built Queens' first supermarket on this plot. The Woodhaven-born Fred Trump begun building houses two years out of high school in 1925 and spent the second half of the 1920s developing homes in southern Queens. After the homebuilding market dried up with the Depression, Trump moved briefly into the food market. Six months after opening the 'Trump Market" he sold it to the King Kullen chain. (Supposedly, when they took the Trump sign off the market, the senior Trump vowed never to put his name on a building again. That did not last, as the giant Coney Island development of the 1960s was given his moniker, and his progeny has followed suit, only more consistently and garishly.) Today, a supermarket still stands on the site, as does a historical marker about Fred Trump's venture.

St. Thomas Roman Catholic Church, 1923. The church was built in 1908-1909 as a small wood-frame mission church for the larger nearby parish of St. Elizabeth's. It became its own institution in 1910. In 1914 the parishioners numbered 2700 and growing. Founded by a German community and clergy, the current church building, built in 1921, was constructed in the style of a Bavarian country church. The brick church building has colorful terra cotta banding and medallions on the front facade and a onion shaped copper spire.

My Archive Summer 2019 “I moved to NYC in 1986. As a World's Fair buff I often went out to the grounds in Flushing Meadows-Corona Park. One time I was with a friend and we stopped here in Woodhaven to walk around a little, explore the neighborhood. I've also been in the habit since the 1970s of photographing old buildings, and quirky signage. This bar caught my eye, and I felt especially fortunate to capture the sign with one lone figure in front of it, she just walked by as I was looking through the viewfinder, adding a little narrative to the image.” —Meredith Marciano
