Loew's Gates Theatre
Post
ca. 1943 Loew's Gates Theatre was part of Loew's Theater chain. The moviehouse opened on November 21st, 1921. Patrons saw Alias Ladyfingers with Bert Lytell, Hard Luck with Buster Keaton, and vaudeville acts on opening night. According to later photos, Loew's Gates suffered a similar fate to others of the franchise and switched box-office hits to screen X Rated films in its later years. The theater closed in 1977. The building is now home to the Pilgrim Baptist Church.

"Wood-frame row houses on Goodwin Place, Bushwick, Brooklyn, ca. 1935. During the 1880s, construction of elevated railways over Broadway (visible at far left), Lexington Avenue and Myrtle Avenue contributed to a surge of residential development in Bushwick. This group of nine wood-frame row houses was built between 1887-1893. The first three houses (farthest left, with higher cornices) were built in 1887 by Theobald Engelhardt, a prolific local architect whose designs included several brewery buildings, working class housing, and Bushwick Avenue mansions for brewery owners. The houses were still intact as late as 1976, when the Landmarks Preservation Commission report for a proposed Bushwick Avenue Historic District noted the deterioration and high risk of demolition. The proposed Historic District was never approved, and as predicted, the houses have not survived. Today the Goodwin Gardens community garden operates on the site."

Roosevelt Savings Bank, 1906-1907. This building, formerly the Eastern District Savings Bank, was designed by architects Helmle, Huberty, & Hudswell. It was renamed to honor President Theodore Roosevelt in 1920. The bank served those in the "Eastern District," which encompassed some of East Williamsburg, Bedford-Stuyvesant, and Bushwick. The bank was utilized by many of the local businesses in the manufacturing industry.

Patchen Avenue, at the southeast corner of Greene Avenue, showing a synagogue, 1941. This building, noted as a synagogue in the photographer's notes, remains standing today but is no longer in use due to a fire that broke out in 2016. The Rabbi, Baruch Yehudah, hopes to rebuild the house of worship, which he says has been on this corner since the 1700s and a synagogue since the 1860s. The original synagogue was named B’nai Jacob Joseph and housed an Ashkenazi orthodox community. Up until 2016 (and since 1967) the building housed B’nai Adath Kol Beth Yisrael, an Israelite community of African-American Jews.
