Bayside Cemetery
Post
Bayside Cemetery, 1965. Bayside Cemetery was founded in 1865, making it one of the oldest Jewish cemeteries in New York City that is still active. The graveyard was established by the Congregation Shaare Zedek, a former Lower East Side Orthodox synagogue, now a Upper West Side Conservative synagogue. The cemetery is said to have more than 35,000 burials. It suffered from neglect and vandalism in the last decades of the 20th century, with overgrowth so intense the graves were totally obscured. Only in the new century, and with the assistance of volunteers and an organization called The Community Association for Jewish At-Risk Cemeteries, has Bayside been returned to a state where the stone and paths are visible and passable.

432 Eldert Lane, 1922. This Italianate wood-frame home was likely built in the middle of the 19th century. According to census data the home was occupied in 1940 by Anna Doving, age 55, and three lodgers. Much like many of the large single family homes built in the 19th century, by the early/middle of the 20th century, it had been converted to multi-family or lodging residences.
