Story

The story of Manhattan Beach's development as a ritzy summer destination begins with Austin Corbin. A roguish railroad magnate and financier, Corbin wanted to develop a luxurious resort close to the city for the wealthy where the wealthy could vacation.

The frame house to the left of the right of way in the background, is No. 120 West End Ave. The Long Island R.R. right of way is also seen. This area comprises of 12 acres, which extends north from Brighton Beach through to Neptune Ave, with frontage on Shore Ave. Upon this site which is near a fully developed community will be erected apartments and stores. Caption: "New synagogue--Plans have been filed ... for a new synagogue additionand alterations to the present Congregation B'nai Israel at 60 West End Ave., Manhattan Beach. Included in the plans are an assembly room with a capacity of 600, meeting rooms for the Boy Scouts, American Legion and Women's Auxiliary. The cost of the improvements is estimated at $420,000.
