This eight-story white brick and stone neo-Classical building was constructed in 1897 by architects Neville & Bagge for Jno. K. Todd. It housed clothing manufacturers, the Oakland Chemical Company, multiple publishing companies, a Book Row seller, and “the Library of Science.” Among the publishers was one which re-published a seminal work touted as one of the classics in the 20th century which provided a compelling depiction of Jewish immigrant life on the Lower East Side.
