The St. Denis Hotel was located at this site until it was demolished in 2019. Completed in 1853 by architect and James Renwick, it was one of the grandest hotels in the country, and was frequented by U.S. Presidents and prominent political figures, writers, musicians, inventors, actors, entertainers, artists, publishers, and agitators. It also played a significant role in the city’s African American, women’s, and leftist/labor history. Prior to the hotel’s demolition, Village Preservation and others led a campaign to landmark the building and its surroundings. In 2019 the St. Denis was demolished, with the new office tower replacing it.
