Originally built in 1869-70 as a pair of six- and seven-story loft buildings, the current façade and four-story height of this structure dates to 1958, just before the influential publishing house Grove Press moved here. The original 6-story building at 66-68 University Place, which forms the northern two-thirds of the current building, was built by architect Chapin and builder Stewart & Smith in 1869-70. It originally served as the factory and office of Hazelton Brothers, a piano manufacturing firm, for a half-century.
