St. Luke's Hospital, Midtown
Manhattan: 5th Avenue - 54th Street (West) Fifth Avenue, west side, at . . 54th Street, showing St. Lukes Hospital at the N. W. corner of same. This structure was erected in 1858, thru the efforts of the Rev. Dr. William A. Vuhlenberg, the rector of the Church of the Holy Communion. He began this work in 1846 and in 1850 raised a subscription of V100,00O. A corporation was formed and in 1854 opened an infirmary in a Sixth Avenue house to be conducted by the Sisters of the Holy Communion. In 1888 a Craining School for Nurses was established. In 1892, the Trustees purchased a tract on W. 113th Street, near tne (then) proposed Cathedral of St. John and erected a new hospital. This site in 1w39 is occupied by the 9 story University Club. This view shows, a vacant lot at the S. W . corner of this point,at the ieft of which stood for years the Rockefeller residence. See views on 54th Street for same. About 1859 Gift of George T. Bagoe
