"My parents, Mae & Michael Wickham, soon after their wedding at the house they rented in Flushing, 137-57 Holly Avenue. They met and were married, in the Bronx. When my father, a sheet metal worker at the Brooklyn Navy Yard, died in 1944 I was two years old. My mother found a job as a cook at Western Queens Nursery in the Queensbridge Houses, Long Island City. She enrolled me, and we went to work together, five days a week until I started 1st grade in 1948. She retired from that job in 1972." - Brian Wickham

My mother and her two friends would have been high school seniors at Bishop’s so this photo likely dates from 1941. Left to Right: Gertrude Ryan (my mother - married James R. "Hoping Mom is forever Sixteen…Mom, Grace Lum Chu, traveled from upstate New York to visit her father in July 1948. She was in front of the Inwood Chinese-American Restaurant. The restaurant was owned and operated by her father along with four other relatives. One of the co-owners was Mom's second cousin Jimmy Lum, Great Grandfather of Nora Lum (Awkwafina)." - Henry Chu

"On weekends, my parents would load me into a papoose on 108th street and take the 1 train to the NR, all the way down to the East Village. Raj Mahal, in typical East Village fashion, was a few steps below ground level, and always had live music in front of the window at the entrance. While we waited for the feast to be laid out on the table, my mother would take me to visit the sitar player, knowing that I would probably be frightened, and expecting a moment of hilarity from me for the friends they had brought with them that night. After many years, the sitar player became a friend, his beard growing increasingly white with every visit downtown on Saturday nights." Natalia Oliveri
