Block House No. 1

This stone fort is the oldest original structure in Central Park. One of a number of fortifications built in the area during for War of 1812, it is the only survivor.

"Meer" is Dutch for "small sea," and as its name suggests, it's a popular fishing spot. The area is immersed in a tranquil atmosphere.

The only formal garden in Central Park, the Conservatory Garden takes its name from a conservatory that stood on the site from 1898 to 1934.

Central Park, The Reservoir

The reservoir's original purpose was to provide the city with clean water. The decommissioned feature (it ceased use in 1993) is and continues to be a popular jogging spot. Well-known runners here have included Jackie O (for whom the reservoir is now named), Bill Clinton, and others.

The South Gatehouse played a crucial role in distributing water to Manhattan. At the time of its completion it was considered a marvel of engineering.

The Great Lawn was at first another reservoir. By the 1930s, the water was drained and filled, and the area began hosting concerts, notably Simon and Garfunkel, Elton John, and the New York Philharmonic.

Cleopatra's Needle

Cleopatra's Needle

Cleopatra's Needle is the oldest manmade object in Central Park. It is one of three Egyptian obelisks erected in major cities in the late 19th century, the other two are in Paris and London. It dates to 1450 BCE (but has no actual connection to Cleopatra).

Belvedere Castle

Belvedere Castle

Calvert Vaux designed the whimsical Belvedere Castle to provide a bit of fantasy and surprise in the park. Since 1919, the National Weather Service has taken measurements of New York's weather from the castle's tower.

Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre

Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre

This Swedish structure was imported to the U.S. in 1876. Stop in and watch a puppet show by master puppeteers. (The marionette company has been performing here since 1939!)
