Schermerhorn Street, north side, between Third and Flatbush Avenues, 1920.
Who knew that dentistry could be such a cut throat business! Here at the corner of Schermerhorn Street, Third Avenue, and Flatbush Avenue, the Ritter Painless Dental Company doled out "painless" teeth extraction. In the same era, another "painless" dentist, a Dr. Parker, located around the corner at 124 Flatbush Avenue, offered similar services. The Ritter building included attention-grabbing, bold signage, akin more to an amusement venue than a doctor's office. Brooklyn historian Suzanne Spellen has suggested that the Painless Parker signage, while oversized, was more tasteful and sedate, in response to the gaudy display of his competitor.
