The Park Avenue Tunnel, then called the Murray Hill Tunnel, was built in 1834 as an open cut trench for New York and Harlem Railroad traffic, including both steam engine-powered trains and horse-drawn vehicles. In 1850, the tunnel was covered over.
In 1871, tunnel traffic shifted to horse-drawn cars only, and three stations were added at the north and south ends, and at 38th Street, inside the tunnel. Electric streetcar service operated from 1898-1935, when the tunnel was closed for conversion to automobile traffic.
