Dilapidated buildings at 223, 225, 227, and 229 Henry Street, ca. 1976. By the 1970s, many buildings in this part of the Lower East Side had been abandoned as the neighborhood developed a reputation for drugs and crime. Today, Henry Street is notable for stretches of tenement architecture which have survived recent development in the area.
