1170 Broadway at the corner of 28th Street. Johnston Building.
Johnston Building, ca. 1905.
This corner Beaux-Arts building was completed between 1902 and 1903 to plans by the firm of Schickel & Ditmars, for a female owner named Caroline Johnston. The limestone building's most noticeable feature is rounded corner bay topped by an ornate tempietto. Though the ground floor has been significantly altered, the building above the first floor remains remarkably intact. In 2012 the building was converted into the NoMad Hotel, a fancy lodging venue, one of the many office buildings converted into hotels in the first decade of the 21st century.
