St. Aloysius Roman Catholic Church ca. 1908

It is possible to time-travel in Harlem simply by turning the corner from Seventh Avenue onto West 132nd Street and unexpectedly coming upon William W. Renwick's St. Aloysius's Roman Catholic Church. Built in 1904, following a journey of Renwick's to Italy, its scarlet doors and polychromed terra-cotta so convincingly evoke Italy's late medieval churches that the effect can be somewhat disorienting. The church was built for a primarily Irish congregation.

Of particular note was the gold-framed window of yellow leaded glass in the nave, which produced a warm focal point in the space of quiet repose. The window's glow abruptly vanished when a tall apartment building was constructed on the next block.
