Between 1945-1955, the venerably Hugo Gallery was located in this townhouse. In the late 1940s, gallerist Alexander Iolas exhibited works from surrealist painters, including Rene Magritte.
In 1952, the gallery mounted a young Andy Warhol's first solo exhibition, entitled "Fifteen Drawings Based on the Writings of Truman Capote."
